People from all walks of Gardena business life attended Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce’s “State of Business Address” Luncheon on Friday, May 6th at the Normandie Casino. Yvonne Mallory and Mitchell Landsdell from the City of Gardena were spotted talking to John Ferrelli of Memorial Hospital of Gardena and Tom Kawamoto of Union Bank. Gardena Police’s District Police Officers were seen mingling with Los Angeles County Fire Officials. Alma Marquez from Senator Wright’s office and Darryn Harris from Assemblyman Bradford’s office, were seen speaking to Don Dear, West Basin Municipal Water District and Sam and Art Kaskanian of Sam’s Autoland.

After having a wonderful lunch by the chefs of the Normandie Casino, Shad Rezai, Golden State Water, served as Master of Ceremonies. Shad spoke about each Sponsor: DCH Gardena Honda, Golden State Water, Memorial Hospital of Gardena, South Bay Health Care, and Southern California Edison. The Gardena Chamber of Commerce is because of the commitment of its members and sponsors.

Shad called Chief Jerry Vrooman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Chief Vrooman stressed the safety of each business’s employees. One can replace a building; but the lost of a life can’t be replaced. He stressed that each business needs a fire evacuation and disaster plan. Find out who your neighbors are so you know the type of hazards that surrounding your business. Make sure that your employees and your business have everything necessary to ensure survival during a catastrophe. Know the thing that you need to take with you in case you are evacuated, i.e. client and computer files, back up files, anything that you will need to ensure that your business can continue tomorrow. You need to be able to grab these things within minutes during an evacuation. Chief Vrooman used his time to make sure that everyone in the room thought about the continuation plan for their continuity plan in the event of a disaster.

Next to speak was Chief Ed Medrano of the Gardena Police Department. He encouraged each person present to take part Gardena’s safety. Chief Medrano introduced the Lieutenants over each District: Lt. Mike Safell of District 1 which encompasses the area between El Segundo and Rosecrans; Lt. Mark Rickerl of District 2 which covers Rosecrans to Redondo Beach Boulevard; and Lt. Uikilifi Niko of District 3 which includes the area between Redondo Beach to 190th. If you are concerned about anything in your District, call one of these Lieutenants today. They are there to ensure your District is safe and friendly to the public. Chief Medrano covered the Adopt a Block program and the new camera system throughout Gardena. He urged businesses to partner with the Gardena Police Department to ensure a safe city.

Shad Rezai introduced Tony Lawson, President of HITCO Carbon Composites. Lawson relived the history of HITCO and explained how great SGL is to its subsidiaries. Many years ago, HITCO did a self evaluation in the midst a downturn in its revenue. They presented a plan to SGL to build upon a new area of business. SGL made the financial investment into HITCO to ensure its success today. HITCO is planning to expand its base in Gardena including increasing its employees count from 500 to nearly 900 staff in Gardena. HITCO is focused on its providers and being a good neighbor in Gardena. Lawson pronounced to the audience that HITCO enjoys being a part of Gardena and will be doing business here for a long time.

Blanca Jimenez represented Congresswoman Maxine Waters who was the Keynote Speaker. Congresswoman Waters was unable to attend due to missing her flight because of an emergency, but she sent her prepared remarks for Jimenez to read to the audience. Congresswoman Waters wanted to ensure that the Gardena Valley area knew that House Democrats unveiled a new campaign called “Make It In America.” This Agenda is based on the conviction that when more products are made in America, more families will be able to make it in America. The agenda is intended to create the conditions to help American businesses produce goods here, innovate here, and creates jobs here; it includes many of the wise investments necessary for America to out-educate, out-innovate, and out-build its international competitors. President Obama has already signed six “Make It In America” bills into law, many of which won bipartisan support. Business and labor leaders alike support this agenda- because “Making It In America” is central to the future of our competiveness, our jobs, and our place in the world.

At the end of the “State of Business Address” Luncheon, the attendees knew that the prosperity of their business is supported in the Gardena Valley area. Our Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce works with Federal, State, and local officials to ensure business success. And, that makes coming to the “State of Business Address” time and money well spent.

On the balmy evening of April 21st, the Boys and Girls Club of South Bay hosted the Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Networking Mixer. Peter Kwon of A-One Auto Center was giving every attendee discounts on oil changes. Tom Kawamoto of Union Bank and Jim Marley of California Bank and Trust were exhorting how to get the most out of our bank. And, Lucy Trujillo-Ramirez and Yesenia Dominguez of Gardena One-Stop were explaining how their program that places employees at local business without payroll costs to the business works.

Everyone who attended the April Business Networking Mixer earned new contacts and business.
The Gardena Boys and Girls Club of South Bay garnered several partners in Luisa Castanon of Sylvan Learning and Heidi Valtierra of Sam’s Club. Luisa wants to make sure that the programs that Sylvan Learning has for students are utilized. Heidi was impressed with the things that the Boys and Girls Club is doing.

John Delino and Mike Herrera spoke about how the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Bay have put kids through college. They also have taken local kids out of their environment to show them what lies outside of their small 8 block radius. In fact, John and Mike mentioned that the majority of the kids who are clients of the Gardena Club have not been to the beach or the mountains. John really enjoys taking the kids out of their environment so they can delve deeper into who they are and who they want to be. Many of the attendees left the Mixer with new found respect and admiration for the work that the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Bay does in the Gardena Valley area. And, many pledged to help the organization further.

Toward the end of the evening a raffle was held, Peter Kwon who recently moved his business to Gardena won a bottle of wine. John Delino won some Coronas and Miller beers. Tom Kawamoto won a nice size bottle of vodka. And, Nate Kincy of Thunderstorm Entertainment won a bottle of wine on his first night out to a Mixer. Nate has an amazing business that produces Corporate and Training videos.

Everyone who attended was pleased with the evening and made new business contacts.
It’s amazing what you will learn at Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Networking Events. On Tuesday, March 15th at the Normandie Casino, the Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce held a Business Networking Mixer hosted by Golden State Water. Shad Rezai of Golden State Water explained that tap water costs each of us “pennies per glass” which is better than bottled. And, most people don’t like the taste of tap water because of the chlorine that is found in it. But, did you know that sitting tap water in a pitcher out on the counter will eradicate the chlorine and better the taste. That’s all most of us needed to know to give up bottled water for good.

Also, overheard at the Mixer was Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce Board Members explaining that California State University, Dominguez Hills and El Camino College wouldn’t exist in the Gardena Valley area if it wasn’t for the Chamber advocating for local higher education for its community. Another snippet mentioned was that neither the 405 nor 110 freeways would cross into the South Bay area the way they do without the persistent lobbying of the Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Each attendee was able to have their moment in the sun. Glenn Mitchell, Chamber Board of Director and Gardena General Insurance staff member, was the master of ceremonies. He invited each attendee forward to give information about their business. Laura Berger, Miss Los Angeles County (Miss America Pageant), played several songs on the piano. She is very talented. UEI College, Arceli DeAnda and Nancy Soloranzo, announced that they have students who are looking for free internships to complete their degrees. The students need 160 hours each. And, Maria Sanchez and Yesenia Dominguez of Gardena One Stop, mentioned that they have free employees waiting for Gardena area business to offer them jobs. Yes, free employees.

There were several banks competing in the house for Dennis Lord, the Gas Company, and Andrew Bornstein’s, Apple Spice Junction, attention including Jim Marley of California Bank and Trust and Tomonari “Tom’ Kawamoto. There were several financial and insurance firms represented including World Financial’s Sandra Pryer and Truman Dyke’s Chad Davenport. And of course, Green Hills Memorial Park had Steve Kubota and Rebecca Gramstrup.

Wanda Love, President, and Sara Colamonica, Secretary, both of the Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce made sure attendees met each other and found out more about their businesses, My Place Hair and Assured Coin and Loan, respectively. We even were able to meet the new Gardena Valley Chamber Administrator, Sharnell Blevins. It was truly an event not to miss.

Make sure you don’t miss the next Business Networking event in April which will be hosted by Gardena Boys and Girls Club. Contact the Gardena Valley Chamber by phone, (310) 532-9905; email, info@gardenachamber.org; or by their website, gardenachamber.org; to ensure that your space is reserved, today.
